Meditation transforms you into a state where your body and mind are consciously relaxed and focused. People who practice meditation have increased awareness, focus, and concentration, and they have a more positive outlook on life.

Meditation is usually associated with monks, mystics, and other spiritual practices. However, you don’t have to be a monk or mystic to enjoy all the great benefits. And, you don’t even have to practice in a special place, you can try it in your living room!

What Are the Benefits of Meditation?

You might ask yourself whether meditation practices truly work and whether their benefits are worth giving a try. And, the simple answer to that is yes!

Meditation has many benefits, from improved health, better mood, and deeper sleep to more energy, vitality, and focus. Less stress, frustration, and worries are also some of the many meditation benefits. Sounds amazing, right?

Meditation is also one of the techniques used in stress management. A person with piled-up problems usually has a hard time concentrating, which often leads to more problems. Meditation techniques can help people achieve a peaceful mental state without drugs. Every step of meditation is completed in the mind!

If you have been feeling down, anxious, or stressed, if you have problems with sleep and concentration, or just want to boost your well-being, you should think about starting a meditation practice.

What Are the Different Types of Meditation Practices?

There are many different methods of meditation, but the basic principles remain the same. The most important part of these principles is to remove obstacles, negative and wandering thoughts, and calm the mind with a deep sense of focus. This will clear the mind of all the noise and prepare it for a higher quality of activity.

The most common meditation practices include:

  • Mindfulness meditation
  • Spiritual meditation
  • Focused meditation
  • Movement meditation
  • Mantra meditation
  • Transcendental meditation
  • Progressive relaxation
  • Loving-kindness meditation
  • Visualization meditation

As a beginner, what you should do is try different ones and find the one that suits you best!

5 Meditation Tips for Beginners

If you decide to try meditation, the first thing you need is determination. Meditation practice does not require specific tools or complicated techniques. You only need willpower and desire to benefit from meditation. Of course, you do need to set some time off every day to practice. I recommend you start with five minutes and gradually increase it.

Remember, if you want to get good results, you need to continue your meditation practice regularly!

Some general meditation for beginners tips to help you get started:

  • Find the most comfortable position which allows you to relax and focus. It can be when sitting cross-legged, standing, lying down, or even walking.
  • When sitting or standing, your back should be straight, but not tense or tight. In other positions, the only thing to remember is no slouching.
  • Loose and comfortable clothes help a lot because tight-fitting clothes can make you feel tense.
  • The place where you meditate should have a soothing atmosphere. It can be your living room, bedroom, or wherever you feel comfortable.
  • You may want to find a quiet, isolated area away from the phone ringing or washing machine buzzing, as silence helps most people relax and meditate. Pleasant scents can also help, so burning some aromatic candles is not a bad idea either.

Keep these tips in mind when you begin your meditation practice for the best possible outcome!

How to Meditate for Beginners Step by Step

Before you begin please remember that meditation is not a one-time thing. It is almost impossible to get a calm state of mind in just a few minutes, especially if it’s your first time trying. You must continue to meditate!

I put together a simple step-by-step guide on how to meditate for beginners. Do as following:

Step 1: Find A Quiet Place

Distraction is an obstacle for those who are just getting started with meditation. When you close your eyes, your hearing increases, so you can hear almost anything around you, which makes it difficult to concentrate.

That’s why it’s important to find a quiet place in your home where there is no noise. Close the windows and lock the door. If possible, you can tell everyone in the house to minimize their noise to avoid distracting you.

Step 2: Get Into Position

You may want to avoid lying down when practicing meditation as a beginner because it can make you sleepy. The purpose here is not to sleep. To prevent this from happening, you can start meditating in the traditional lotus position, or you can find a chair to sit on. Make sure your back is straight and relax with your hands on the armrests or your lap.

Step 3: Begin Your Meditation Session

A great way to start meditation is to perform breathing exercises. Start with closing your eyes and try to relax your body. Push the tension down and let the muscles loosen up. Then start focusing on your breath. Inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth. In this way, you can come up with a rhythm that is easy to focus on. Also, the amount of oxygen in your body will be enough to relax you!

Step 4: Focus On Your Breath

Pay attention to the movement of your body while breathing. Notice how your chest and stomach move with every inhale and exhale. Just focus on your breathing without controlling the speed or intensity.

While you focus on your breath, you will reach a state where your mind will start throwing images at you. These are mostly random thoughts like daily events, future plans, problems, fears, etc. When this happens, simply return your attention to breathing!

Most beginners who start a meditation practice will find themselves thinking about daily problems and worries during meditation, rather than being clear-headed and enjoying a peaceful state. Others might feel bored when they try to empty their minds.

When you encounter those situations, just remember that you will get better over time and be able to fully enjoy meditation!
