How do you view life? Do you find yourself complaining about the smallest things? Do you have a list of problems that just goes on and on? Work pressure, problems with friends, the place you live, the weather, and so on…
What you may not realize is that when you wake up in the morning and find something to complain about, that’s what you will get for the rest of the day. You may have heard of the Law of Attraction, which is the ability to attract whatever we focus on into our lives. In other words, we create our own reality.
What if you woke up and instead of complaining, you were grateful for your existence? Even the smallest changes in your attitude, from complaining to gratitude, will help you appreciate all the blessings around you.
What Is an Attitude of Gratitude?
An attitude of gratitude means making it a habit to be grateful for all parts of your life. It’s a warm feeling of gratefulness towards the world, other people, and all blessings received.
People with an attitude of gratitude have an appreciative mindset, and they are grateful for both small and big things in their lives. They are thankful for everything they’ve received, everything they have (or don’t have), and all the experiences they’ve been through. Even on the bad days, when everything seems to go wrong, they will always find something to be grateful for.
Why Is an Attitude of Gratitude Important to Develop?
Developing an attitude of gratitude is important for your own well-being. According to Harvard, gratefulness is strongly connected to happiness. It helps you feel more positive emotions, enjoy experiences, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships, while also improving your health and overall well-being.
There has been a lot of research on the effects of gratefulness. One study which was done by two psychologists, Dr. Robert A. Emmons, Davis, and Dr. Michael E. McCullough showed some positive results.
In the study, they asked all participants to write a few sentences on a specific topic each week. One group wrote about what they were grateful for. The second group wrote about daily troubles or things that made them unhappy, and the third group wrote about events that affected them (no further instruction to be positive or negative).
After ten weeks, those who expressed gratitude were more optimistic and their lives became better. They also exercised more and had fewer visits to the physicians, than the two other groups.
Having an attitude of gratitude helps you see what is good in your life. As well, it connects you to something greater than yourself, whether that is to other people, nature, or a higher power.
4 Tips to Feel More Grateful
To help you achieve the attitude of gratitude, I put together a list of 4 simple tips:
1. Keep a Gratitude Journal
Put aside a few minutes at the end of the day to write down 4 or 5 things you are grateful for. It may be as simple as you woke up this morning or something special that happened that day. Also, try to write down why you are grateful for these specific things.
Writing down what you are grateful for can help you realize how many blessings you have. Check out THIS post for 50 gratitude journal prompts to feel more grateful.
2. Find Something Beautiful
Start handling your day differently. Take a minute to stop and smell the flowers. In other words, you have to stop rushing through your day.
Stop, breathe, look around, and find something beautiful to take in. Nature is always great, but if you are far from nature, there may be a piece of art, the sky, or some birds that can attract your attention. Focus on it, and just breathe.

3. Shift to a Positive Attitude
This one can feel quite difficult. However, if you can achieve it, you will receive great benefits.
Before allowing yourself to get upset over something, stop yourself, and try to shift your thoughts with a positive attitude. If you feel you are heating up take some time to meditate on it or at least calm yourself down before focusing on the situation. When you have calmed down, take a moment to search for the positive in the situation.
4. Spread More Love
Share kindness with the people around you. Give compliments and say something nice to strangers, friends, and family. Spread love and lift the spirits of others. You will make their day, as well as, yours!
The Attitude of Gratitude
When we find ourselves looking at life with an attitude of gratitude rather than focusing on the bad things, we will find ourselves happier and more appreciative of our lives.
Start practicing gratefulness every day, and you will soon see you have so much to be grateful for. It might feel hard in the beginning, but just like anything else, the more you practice the better you will get.
